Andy and CAIP fostered my development as an independent researcher by targeting not just the accumulation of technical skills, but fundamental growth in my approach to research problems. Under Andy’s mentorship, I learned to leverage cross-disciplinary theories and networks to tackle questions at the cutting edge of our field. His mentorship flows beyond that of a single project or skillset, and has had direct impact on nearly every facet of my professional identity. I am immensely grateful to be able to continue to call Andy a mentor and collaborator.

I trained at CAIP as a post-bacc research assistant and completed my master's thesis under Andy's supervision. This experience fostered the maturation in cultivating, launching, and persisting through the completion of independent research as an emerging clinical scientist. I use these tools from Andy to think critically and independently about the social world and its phenomena to better understand antisocial and aggressive behavior in youth.

I trained as an undergraduate research assistant and a project coordinator/program mentor under the guidance of Dr. De Los Reyes for three years at the University of Maryland. These experiences enriched my education not only on multimodal research methodologies, but also on the importance of valuing participant perspectives that are often overlooked in clinical psychological science and communicating them in a way that is both digestible and actionable. These tenets have directly informed the work I have conducted since leaving CAIP, and I am so appreciative of the mentorship I was able to receive during my time with the lab and beyond.

I was a post-bacc lab manager at CIAP, where I learned foundational perspectives about assessing, conceptualizing, and analyzing multiple data streams in addition to leadership skills I implement in my own research team. Even after leaving CAIP, Andy has remained a constant source of mentorship and support in my predoctoral and postdoctoral training.

Dr. Sarah Thomas is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Human Behavior at the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and directs the Thomas Lab where she investigates biobehavioral processes associated with adolescent cannabis use. Dr. Thomas's interest in adolescent brain development and substance use risk began during her graduate training at the CAIP where she was fortunate to have the support from Dr. De Los Reyes to write and be awarded a NIDA F31 fellowship to investigate biobehavioral correlates of adolescent risk behaviors. Although there were many invaluable skills she learned during her time at CAIP, that she continues to use, from writing to data analysis to study design, the most important skill has been perseverance.
